What else is there to see and do in Montego Bay?
Just a short drive (about 80 km) from Montego Bay, you will find Black River – capital of the parish of St. Elizabeth on Jamaica’s south coast. It is a popular haven for ecological tours. The Great Morass is a 200-sq-km wetland teeming with wildlife. The best way to explore is by small watercraft or tour boat.
TierOne Travel can book you a tour with experienced and knowledgeable guides who can show you the best spots to view crocodiles and pelicans. They will take you to the best riverside shacks for a bite to eat and stop so you can have a dip in a hidden swimming pool – minus the crocodiles! There are more than 100 bird species to photograph if you can find them, including seven species of heron. We can even organize a ‘crocodile safari’ for you to see these ancient creatures up close and watch your guide feed them chicken.
Take a Detour to Montego Bay via the Blue Mountains
If you love hiking and camping, you can initially fly into Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, and then head a short distance to the Blue Mountains for a few days before booking into a Jamaica all inclusive resort in Montego Bay. Or, if you like, start out at the resort and then head to the Blue Mountains from there.
There are countless Blue Mountain tours to choose from. We recommend you let a TierOne Travel agent find you the perfect tour for your specific needs and interests. We can also ensure the tour guide is legitimate and experienced and that you are not overcharged. Your enjoyment and safety come first with TierOne Travel.
The Blue Mountains form the longest mountain range along the eastern edge of Jamaica and features majestic scenery. The mountain views are spectacular. They are also home to quaint villages with unique restaurants where you can sample some of the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. And on your tour, you will be sure to discover jaw-dropping waterfalls.
What other animals can you see in and around Montego Bay?
Sea turtles, which unfortunately are an endangered species, are found near Montego Bay. The leatherback sea turtle (and other turtle species) comes ashore on Jamaica’s north coast to the east of Ocho Rios (about 100 km along the coast from Montego Bay) in order to lay their eggs. Nesting mostly at night, the female turtles will crawl ashore and dig a small hole in the sand to lay an average of 100 eggs (anywhere from two to eight times a year). And about 60 days later, the hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea.
You’ve seen the photos and videos. It’s quite a sight. People will line up on either side of the baby turtles to protect them as they make their way to the water. Approximately one out of a thousand will survive, as they have so many predators such as birds, ghost crams, racoons and even some species of fish once they reach the ocean. Sadly, humans are capture adult turtles for meat, eggs, skin and colorful shells – threatening their survival on earth.
Swim with the dolphins
While In Ocho Rios, you might also want to check out Dolphin Cove where you can swim with dolphins and stingrays. Explore the Jungle train and interact with exotic birds, snakes and iguanas. You can even take in a shark show and get to meet some pirates.
The manatee is another endangered creature found in the shallow brackish coastal waters off Jamaica. They especially like Jamaica’s southwest coast, where rivers flow into the sea, thus providing a source of drinking water. They have also been spotted in the north on the shores between Montego Bay and Ocho Rio Locally known as sea cows, manatees can weigh 1000 lbs and measure 1-4 meters in length. They breath air, so surface frequently and make it more likely that you will spot them.
Watch out for the lizards
Lizards are so plentiful that they are considered a nuisance in Jamaica. They can be found everywhere, even in homes. There are two types – the first kind is green and the second is translucent, almost skin color. They will scurry away in the daytime. It’s a night that they really come out and it’s not uncommon to hear their loud screech. They are noisy, but harmless.
If you like to scuba dive or snorkel, there are amazing arches and coves to explore around Montego Bay and Negril. For beginners, the Surprise Reef is for you. For more advanced divers, the Shark’s Reef can’t be missed. And for the more adventurous, you can dive The Wreck (a plane wreck lying at 18m underwater) in Montego Bay.
JAMAICA ALL INCLUSIVE Food and drinks
You won’t go hungry at a Jamaica all inclusive resort in Montego Bay. You can choose from traditional Jamaican food to more American or European style food. Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish and it’s served mostly for breakfast. Ackee is a bright red tropical fruit with a yellowish looking flesh inside. Eaten prematurely, it releases toxic gas that can be lethal, so be sure to eat it when ripe. Curry goat is another popular dish with an Indian influence. It is usually served with rice, peas and a carrot-cabbage slaw. Oxtail can be found on most menus. Prepared with love and care, it can be quite a delicacy.
Other Jamaican foods include bammy, which is a flat round bread made from grated yucca, fried dumplings, bread fruit, spicy Jerk pork or chicken, all manner of coconut deserts, rum cake, sugar cane and mangos. And to wash it all down, you can drink coconut water (called ice cold jelly by street vendors), cheap local beer, and, of course, Jamaica’s world-famous rum.
What is the best time to visit A Jamaica All Inclusive?
The best time to travel to Jamaica is between November and March. It’s a bit crowded in February and March due mainly to North America’s Spring Break, so you might want to start planning now to book a Jamaica all inclusive resort in late 2020 or early 2021. If you don’t mind a bit of rain, April and May can be quite nice and you might save a bit on accommodation and flights. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to October 31, which makes it risky to travel the island during those five months.
