Q&A with Laurielee
What made you choose the Regent Seven Seas Splendor for your Mediterranean cruise?
I think everyone at some point has yearned to travel in luxury to feel pampered and special. When given the opportunity to sail with Regent, I jumped on board with much anticipation and excitement.
Was this your first time sailing with Regent? How did it compare to other cruise lines?
This was my first experience with Regent Seven Seas. I have sailed with a good number of other cruise lines, and this far surpassed my expectations.
What was your first impression when you stepped onboard?
We were in awe. Being greeted with a cold towel and a glass of champagne at the bottom of the magnificent staircase was a very warm welcome. The ship is amazing.
Can you describe the overall atmosphere and design of the Splendor?
Unpretentious luxury. Her design was clean, fresh and modern. The atmosphere onboard was incredibly comfortable, welcoming and relaxing.
What were your favourite features or spaces on the ship?
The main pool area seemed to be an area to meet people, and it was very relaxing with ample loungers. Decks 4 and 5 hosted the reception, business center, destinations desk, theatre, boutiques, cafe, lounges, and of course showcased the fabulous main staircase that led to the Compass Rose, main dining room, casino and the Splendor lounge.
How was the service onboard?
Incredible – the attention to detail, politeness, graciousness and professionalism were unrivaled.
What was the dining experience like?
The cuisine and atmosphere were exemplary.
Any standout meals or restaurants?
We had the pleasure of dining in each of the specialty restaurants. The Prime 7 (steakhouse) was amazing. Pacific Rim (Asian influenced) was outstanding, and the Chartreuse (French) did not disappoint. Each of the specialty dining venues was decorated appropriately, and we found the service, atmosphere and comfort level to be exquisite.
Did you try any of the onboard activities or entertainment? What stood out?
The gym facility was a very pleasant surprise. Very spacious with up-to-date equipment in the gym, offering included classes. The use of the spa facilities is included, however, treatments are additional. The spa was a great way to relax on sailing days or when you return to the ship after your excursions.
What type of suite did you stay in, and what did you love about it?
I was in a Concierge suite and have to say it was more than just comfortable – it was luxurious. When I walked through the entrance, my eyes lit up. It had a very large bathroom with a separate tub and shower, along with a two-sink vanity equipped with wonderful L’Occitane amenities. A walk-in closet provided a great deal of space. In the main area of the suite was a dresser, a beautiful love seat, a small table which presented a lovely bottle of champagne and a welcome note, and then another counter with a small fridge and a lovely cabinet. Regent aims to please, and they stocked our suite with the beverages of our liking.
How did the all-inclusive experience enhance your trip?
No surprises, it was an easy feeling (could get used to this).
Which Mediterranean ports did you visit on this itinerary?
The sailing started in magical Monte Carlo, Monaco, the epitome of Mediterranean opulence in the Côte d’Azur, with a very lavish lifestyle for the wealthy residents. It is very common to see an array of Rolls-Royces, Maseratis, Lamborghinis and high-end vehicles. The immersive itinerary had the ship overnighting in the port to enable exploring more of the area and an opportunity to visit the upscale shops of Avenue Princess Grace and take in the luxurious Monte Carlo Casino.
With the ship ported for a few days, it offered beautiful included excursions to Nice, Cannes, Grasse, St Paul and more. From there, we sailed to Salerno, located in the Campania region of Southern Italy, sitting along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Salerno was our home for two glorious nights.
The excursions offered local wine tastings and local culinary experiences along with visiting the beautiful Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and the ruins of Pompeii. This region is well known for tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and fresh herbs and of course lemons and limoncello. Cafes are in abundance to enjoy. Truly a region of past and present beauty with so much to explore.
We continued on to Kusadasi, Turkey ( its name, meaning “bird Island” ), where we explored the ancient city of Ephesus, founded in the 10th century BCE by Greek colonists and then later became part of the Roman Empire. The ancient architecture continues to be restored, for many visitors from across the globe to visit and walk amongst the ruins. We visited a Turkish carpet weaving center, markets, and so much more.
Our last port was the beautiful port of Athens, the capital of Greece. A visit to the Acropolis and the Parthenon was a must. Once again, the amazing, intricate architecture became a sight to behold. The view of the fabulous amphitheatre and the colorful building built into the hills by the sea was photographed by many.
Do you have a favourite destination from the cruise? What made it special?
I think Monaco. The location really allowed us to see so much of the Côte d’Azur in the Mediterranean. With Nice being less than an hour away, Cannes very close by, along with Grasse and St Paul, you could really get a sense of the region. The many sidewalk open cafes and restaurants, and pastry shops are in abundance and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
What’s one thing you wish more travelers knew about Regent Cruises?
You do not have to be wealthy or have a star-studded wardrobe to sail on Regent; it is not pretentious. Dreams can become a reality – you just need to contact me as your travel professional, plan, save and then travel and explore!
Who would you recommend this type of cruise experience to?
Someone who wants to explore in comfort and have the finest of amenities at their fingertips.
Singles (there is a solo program on board, so never feel alone), couples and of course families – although you do not see a great deal of children onboard. You never truly know someone’s background by looking at them. Regent offers unrivalled luxury without being pretentious.
Any tips for travelers considering a Mediterranean itinerary?
Secure your cruise with a Travel Professional. Spend time pre- and post to experience more and immerse yourself in the destination.
What moment from the cruise will you never forget?
Their infamous “block party”!At the beginning of the sailing, around 5ish, they announce through the ship that when the bell rings, to step out of your stateroom in whatever state you are in (within reason), even if you are in your bathrobe, getting ready for cocktails and supper. Bring your empty wine glass and then meet your neighbors on your floor. The Crew director, general manager, and entertainment staff start at the top deck and make their way through the ship and your glass is filled with red or white wine and brought to you. Music is playing, people cheering. It is an amazing icebreaker to get to know people right at the beginning of the cruise.
Would you sail with Regent again—and where to next?
Absolutely!!!!! More Europe – perhaps Spain, Portugal, Croatia or maybe even Asia.
