Q&A with Akeela

What made you choose Viking for this Athens to Istanbul journey?

I had visited both Greece and Turkey before and loved them, so I longed to return, and this Viking itinerary checked all the boxes.

Which destinations/ports did you visit during your cruise?

Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Ephesus, Istanbul. Sadly, we missed Troy due to windy weather.

What surprised you most about the trip?

How quiet it was this time around in high season – August. I loved that it was less crowded than expected.

What was your favourite destination or stop along the way, and why?

Ephesus for sure. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and so much more excavation has been done since I was last there. From early Greek settlement to the Roman Empire and later, the centre of Christianity. What a treat for archaeological enthusiasts! The Greek amphitheatre is spectacular. It’s on my bucket list to see a concert there one day.

Was there a particular excursion or experience that stood out to you?

I also love Istanbul. Such a safe, medieval city with so much to offer. I always find it peaceful, as the people are warm and welcoming. There are many mosques and monuments, including the Hagia Sofia and the Blue mosque. The surrounding areas are a foodie treat and a great place to people-watch.

How did you find the balance between organized excursions and free time?

Very well balanced. Most tours depart early in the mornings, and we had the afternoons and evenings free to do as we wished or go on optional excursions.

What did you enjoy most about the Viking onboard experience?

The Viking Vesta is a brand new ship whose maiden voyage was in 2025. The ship is immaculate, well organized and welcoming. I especially enjoyed the cleverly designed stateroom spaces where everything can be stored out of sight, including a hidden vanity. The Nordic spa, which features hot and cold pools and a snow grotto, was appreciated on sea days. There is no extra charge, so you can go as much as you wish; there is enough space for everyone.

How would you describe the food and dining experience?

Food was great. There was always something for everyone and many dining venues. The best meal was at one of the specialty dining restaurants, Chef’s Table, which featured an Asian theme that night. The Chairman’s own “Mamsen”, named for his mother and featuring her own Norwegian recipes, was a treat for anyone who enjoys Scandinavian flavours.

What did you think of your accommodations?

Great! Every stateroom had a very private balcony; spacious, clean, well-organized, and very comfortable beds featuring Norwegian wool blankets.

How would you describe the pace of the itinerary?

It was a good pace. Not too busy and enough time to enjoy the ship and shore.

Did you add extra time in Athens or Istanbul before or after the cruise?

Yes! We enjoyed two glorious nights and stayed right in the Plaka, the oldest neighbourhood in Athens. There were many restaurants, gelato shops and great shopping for anything one desires. We had a great dinner overlooking the lighted Acropolis. Spectacular. There are many historical sites, but since we had visited them before, we wandered through medieval villages and the Plaka this time. However, the Acropolis and Parthenon are not to be missed.

Who would you recommend this Viking itinerary to?

The name of the itinerary is Ancient Mediterranean Treasures, which says it all. If you love history, ancient civilizations, antiquities, coastal towns and villages, this is for you. This is also a good itinerary for a taste of Greece and Turkey. It is slower-paced so you have time to go ashore at your own pace. This is a smaller ship, only 998 guests, so there are no crowds and no lineups. The age group on this particular sailing were mostly seniors.

Akeela’s journey from Athens to Istanbul offered a wonderful mix of destinations, experiences and time to explore along the way. Her firsthand experience is just one example of what makes cruising such a memorable way to discover multiple destinations in one journey.
