Entry Requirements to Los Cabos

Cabo San Lucas has been certified by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) as a Safe Destination and is open and ready for international tourism.

Mexico is among a few select nations that have very few COVID-19 health protocols for entry. There are currently no quarantine periods for travelers entering Los Cabos, and Mexico does not require Covid-19 tests before or after arriving.

However, travelers are encouraged to have valid travel insurance that covers Covid-19 for the duration of their trip.

Mexican cities have made the wearing of face masks in public mandatory. Social distancing should be followed in all public spaces, hotels, restaurants, and beaches. In Los Cabos specifically, wearing face masks in businesses and public spaces has been deemed mandatory.

Los Cabos Weather and When to Go

At the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet the subtropical desert of the Los Cabos region. Here, the climate is warm, dry and sunny year-round. Boasting over 320 days of sunshine every year, high temperatures in the summertime can exceed 38C. The average high in August is 34C, with an average low of 24C.

Winters are beautiful in Los Cabos, with an average high of 25C in January and a low of 13C. Though Los Cabos does have a rainy season in July through October, little rain overall falls in this desert area. During the four-month rainy season, on average, there is only 6.8 inches of rain. And the total annual rainfall is just 9.1 inches!

Winter sea temperatures are cooler here than mainland Mexico, dipping as low as 21C, but the desert sun warms the water up to 27C by summer. Hurricane season in Los Cabos lasts from June through October, and the region can experience earthquakes from time to time. Humidity is higher here than you might expect for a desert climate, but it never reaches above 70 percent.

Overall, the climate in Los Cabos is perfect for a getaway if you love hot, sunny, dry weather.

Top Activities & Excursions

Land’s End

Located at the southern end of Cabo San Lucas between Playa del Amor and Playa del Divorcio, the Land’s End rock formations were created from Southern Baja Peninsula’s rough winds and seas. You can see sea lions here, which frequent the area, especially along the Los Frailes rock formation. Land’s End is an ideal location  for couples looking for a romantic spot to see the sunset.

We think that the best way to see Land’s End is from a water taxis or boat tour. Some tours even offer glass-bottom boats, so you can admire out the sea life as well!

You cannot reach Land’s End on foot, and the easiest way to get there is via water taxi from the downtown marina. Your hotel can also help you arrange a tour, but it can be more affordable to book through your TierOne Travel Agent ahead of time.

Cabo Pulmo National Park

Divers will adore this marine reserve, which is well off-the-grid in an unpopulated region – and this is half of the fun! The coast here has beautiful gentle coves with big blue skies and is dotted with cactuses. This national park has been set up as protection for a chain of coral reefs. Even if you are only snorkelling, the wealth of sea life in these waters is incredible! At times, you could even find yourself enveloped by schools of fish. 5/7 of the sea turtle species in this area reside here while on the reefs, which have 11 coral varieties. You could even see amazing molluscs among the multicoloured parrotfish and butterflyfish!

Whale Watching

Several species of whales make their way to this area every year. Whale watching is extremely popular in Cabo and is known as a. must-do activity while you are in the area! Generally, the best time to whale watch is between December to April. January through March offers the chance to see baby whales, too! There are many tour companies specializing in whale watching adventures, but your TierOne Travel Consultant can book you the best value tours.

Most whale watching tours last 2 ½ hours and are offered several times a day. For the best chance of seeing the whales, choose the late afternoon tour. The waters are more rough and chances you might get wet, but people often report seeing the most whale activity at this time of day.

Los Cabos Mexico

Golf

Los Cabos is known as one of the best place to play golf in Mexico, and for good reason! Seven of Mexico’s top fifteen golf courses listed in Golfer’s Digest in 2016 were based in Los Cabos. This is extremely impressive because the first golf course here only opened in 1987!

The highest-rated of all the golf course here is Cabo del Sol, with an Ocean Course plotted by Jack Nicklaus and a Desert Course plotted by Tom Weiskopf. After a round of golf here, you can watch the ocean from the veranda of the hacienda-style clubhouse.

It is hard to choose a golf spot in Los Cabos because the quantity and quality of greens remain among the highest in the world. Club Campestre San Jose and Palmilla Golf Club are two popular courses in San José del Cabo that draw professionals and golf enthusiasts alike.

Cabo San Lucas boasts plenty of links to hit as well. The Cabo del Sol Desert Course and Ocean Course, Diamante Cabo San Lucas and El Dorado Golf Course all feature 18-hole courses with incredible views, challenging water hazards and pristine greens, according to recent travelers.

Mission San José del Cabo Church

The historical landmark of Mission San Jose Del Cabo is a Colonial-style parish church. Located in San Jose, it is the remainder of a mission founded in the 18th century and was the southernmost of a line of Jesuit missions that ran down the Baja California peninsula.

In 1735 there was a revolt among the local Pericú culture. The missionary Nicolás Tamaral ended up being sacrificed. The remaining church has a simple but refined facade. There is a plaque outside explaining the first few years of the mission. Definitely worth a visit, especially for history buffs!

Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden

This attraction at Puerto los Cabos spans five hectares and features more than 1,500 varieties of cactuses and succulents from all around the world.

The Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden is planted as a homage to desert plants, with one million specimens arranged in strips and circles. Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden also offers a sculpture garden featuring works by some famous Mexican modern artists, such as Gabriel Macotela, José Luis Cuevas and Manuel Felguérez. On Wednesday evenings, the park is the scene of an incredible Huichol acrobatics and dance show. A must-see!

Diving

Los Cabos is as good as it gets for seasoned scuba divers! The reefs are bright with sealife and you can drift along with the currents. Cabo Pulmo offers amazing bull shark dives, and sea lions may approach you! If you check out the depths of the Cabo San Lucas Underwater Canyon, you can witness a bizarre natural phenomenon known as “Sand Falls”. During Sand Falls, sand cascades down the cliff, propelled by currents and the slight movements of tectonic plates.

If you are new to diving, Cabo Pulmo and the Corridor offer protected coves where newcomers can enter the water easily from the beach.

Outdoor Adventures

The raw desert interior of Baja California Sur is definitely geared towards high-adrenaline fun! For adventure junkies, there are ATV and buggy tours where you can ride along dusty riverbeds. Tour companies in San Lucas and San José will pick you up from your hotel and take you out to the remote and beautiful desert for some high-speed drives! Many offer the opportunity for your memories to be captured by a professional photographer, as well as post-adventure beers to wind down from the adrenaline rush.

Tour companies also offer parasailing, ziplining, and more.

For younger family members, Wild Canyon features a zoo with macaws, iguanas, crocodiles, and more camels that kids can interact with. There’s even an option to handle a baby croc for those brave enough!

There is no shortage of exciting outdoor adventure options for those looking for them in Los Cabos.

Hike Mount Solmar

A rewarding and free activity available in Cabo San Lucas that we highly recommend is climbing the peak on Land’s End!

Even if the slopes of Mount Solmar look difficult and steep, the hike to the top is achievable for all ages, as the rocks act as natural steps and the peak is not much more than 100 metres above sea level. The most difficult part is finding the trailhead! Nothing a short Google search can’t fix.

Once you approach the summit, the panorama views of Los Arcos and the San Lucas Bay are everything you’d hope for, and more. This hike is a great way to burn off those fancy beach cocktails and delicious resort food!

Best Restaurants in Los Cabos

El Farallon

El Farallón features a jaw-dropping, breathtaking cliffside setting that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Located at the exclusive Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas, El Farallón pairs fresh local seafood with a romantic atmosphere. Decorated in rustic elegant touches like lanterns and hand-crafted furniture, the atmosphere is an amazing addition to the incredible scenery.

The fish is caught fresh daily, and you can select from an assortment of sea bass, red snapper, striped bass, shrimp, tuna, dorado, clams and lobster. The fish is then weighed and grilled with an array of fresh chilies. Soups and salads are included with all entrées and for those who prefer meat over fish, rib-eye steaks are also available.

El Farallón ranks with Sunset MonaLisa as one of the most romantic dining options in all of Los Cabos, and the addition of a stunning Champagne terrace has only enhanced the wow factor!

The Cape: A Thompson Hotel, Manta

Retro-chic hotel The Cape offers up Manta, an exquisite dining experience. Its chef is Enrique Olvera, whose Mexico City-based Pujol and New York City restaurant Cosme are ranked among the 100 best restaurants in the world!

This hotel has a superb location on legendary Playa Monumentos surf beach. Manta showcases spectacular views of this beach and the arch – especially at sunset! The rotating menu focuses on Pacific Rim cuisine and fresh local seafood, with at least 15 dishes available on a nightly basis. Multi-course tasting menus are the way to go here, offering excellent pairing advice provided courtesy of an onsite sommelier. The generous wine list includes plenty of options from Baja’s local wine country, named Valle de Guadalupe.

Flora’s Field Kitchen

Flora’s Field Kitchen pioneered the farm-to-table dining experience in Los Cabos. It is an absolute must-see for visiting foodies!

Flora’s looks out over 10 acres of organic field at Flora Farm, and the meat is sourced from a nearby ranch. The restaurant has a very intimate feel, and the food offerings range from gourmet pizzas to farm-raised pork and homemade pasta.

The Sunday brunch offering is very popular, with reservations recommended for any visit to the restaurant. Farm Bar offers local fresh fruit juices, wine, craft beer and cocktails. There is also a bakery and organic grocery, and the property includes boutique shops to browse. A dining delight not to be missed!

Comal

The signature restaurant at the newly opened Chileno Bay Resort & Residences is Comal, which is a true feast for the eyes! It features stylish décor from a a Los Angeles-based designer from a perch overlooking the beautiful Sea of Cortés.

The restaurant features the talents of Chef Yvan Mucharraz (formerly Director of Food and Beverage at The Resort at Pedregal) and Beverage Manager Osvaldo Vazquez (known for creating the innovative cocktail menu at The Cape). What Comal does best is to provide contemporary twists on traditional Mexican favorites, such as ceviches and chilpachole broth, duck carnitas and chicharrón. There is a large wine list offering plenty of pairing options and Vazquez unveils brand new cocktail recipes on a regular basis. Don’t miss it!

Acre Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

Acre Baja is known for its boutique treehouse accommodations, which are unique and special and the only ones of their kind in Los Cabos! Its also known for its farm-to-table restaurant, Acre Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. Here foodies can find themselves in a foodie oasis, with dishes and drinks crafted using ingredients that are found across the 25-acre property’s farm. Ingredients are also sourced from local ranchers and fishermen.

Launched in 2016 by Stuart McPherson and Cam Watt, who is the owner of Vancouver’s renowned The Keefer Bar, Acre Restaurant & Cocktail Bar has quickly become one of the leaders of the thriving Los Cabos locavore movement. This standing should only continue now that Alex Branch has taken over executive chef duties! He has been a major culinary influence in Los Cabos for many years, and has worked as executive sous chef at the ultra-luxurious One&Only Palmilla resort, helming Enrique Olvera’s Manta at The Cape, and has also acted as the executive property chef for the Hakkasan Group at The Grand Mayan at Vidanta Los Cabos. Branch’s arrival signals that the best is yet to come for what is already a benchmark local restaurant. Check out Acre on your visit to Los Cabos and find out why!

Best Beaches in Los Cabos

Lovers Beach – Playa Del Amor, LOS CABOS

Located right around the Land’s End rock formations, Playa del Amor (or Lover’s Beach) is one of Cabo’s most famous stretches of shoreline! Sitting south of Cabo’s downtown area, it remains easily accessible by water taxi from the marina. This stretch of sandy beach is relaxing, providing a nice view of the blue water and a great spot for suntanning.

Chileno Beach, LOS CABOS

Chileno Beach’s calm, shallow waters make it a wonderful spot for snorkelers, but travelers also love Chileno’s cream-colored shore for the lack of noisy bars and restaurants that plague other Los Cabos beaches!

Chileno Beach is easily and affordably accessible by bus from both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, but we recommend arriving by car if you don’t want to do a lot of walking and waiting in the heat (buses frequent the area every 20 to 30 minutes). Arrive before 10 am to beat the crowds!

Playa El Médano, LOS CABOS

Playa El Médano is known as Cabo’s most crowded beach, with crystal blue waters and many beachside watering holes attracting throngs of sunbathers. It is situated just south of downtown and east of the marina and is free to visit, with no set hours of operation.

Playa El Médano also offers plenty of activities, such as beach volleyball, jet skiing, kayaking, boogie boarding and parasailing. From the nearby boat port, you can also take snorkeling tour or a panga (boat) out to the iconic El Arco (the arch).

Despite its obvious crowds, Playa El Médano and its waters remain very clean. It has soft sand, clear water, and you can swim in the ocean here, unlike other Los Cabos area beaches, which have waves and currents that are too violent. There are also numerous nearby eateries and bars for when you are hungry or just craving a drink.

Playa Palmilla, LOS CABOS

Beautiful Tourist Corridor-based Playa Palmilla is one of the Los Cabos’ best swimming beaches, in a protected cove of the generally tranquil Sea of Cortés waters. The swimming conditions here are so good that Playa Palmilla hosts the swim leg of the annual Ironman Los Cabos 70.3 half-triathlon!

Snorkeling, fishing and kayaking are also great here. The beach is likewise a popular spot for suntanning, beach activities and long beach walks. To access this beach, take the Palmilla exit at Km. 27. Palmilla is a Blue Flag-certified beach, with all the expected services. Public parking is available here, and palapas are available for those seeking shade.

Playa Santa Maria, LOS CABOS

Although not quite as popular as Tourist Corridor neighbor Playa Chileno, this lovely horseshoe-shaped beach is worth a visit! Bahia Santa Maria is protected, and includes a marine sanctuary. Here you will find a colorful array of sea life visible. If you’re not snorkeling with a tour, you’ll need to bring your own equipment, as there are few rentals or services at Santa María. This is a Blue Flag-certified beach and has all the public services and access, including a parking lot and restrooms.

Playa Costa Azul, LOS CABOS

One of Los Cabos’ signature beaches in the San José del Cabo area is Playa Costa Azul, which offers sun, sand and surf. Costa Azul is located near Km 29 on the Carretera Transpeninsular, and features all the standard beach services.

The best surf breaks are found at Zippers and The Rock, with beginner-friendly Middle Break used for lessons for beginners. Zippers surf break is the site of the annual WSL-sponsored Los Cabos Open of Surf, and is often crowded during the summer months. The cantina here is a popular place for lunch, dinner, drinks or just to get a little shade after some sunbathing. There are a few vendors at Costa Azul, but they are not overly aggressive.
