Greece and Turkey Cruise with Regent
Shelley was offered the opportunity to travel to Greece and hop on a roundtrip Regent cruise that sailed through beautiful Greek islands and vibrant Turkey. Here’s her trip summary:
Questions & Answers with Shelley
Welcome home! Overall, how was the entire experience of your cruise to Greece and Turkey with Regent?
It was really fabulous to be traveling again! Europe has such a different feel to it, with all of the charming sidewalk cafes and shops, and the weather was in the low 20s, so it was still nice and warm to be able to spend time outside.
What were some of the highlights of your trip – any favorite memories that stand out?
There were so many highlights….just being in Athens surrounded by all the history was fascinating in itself!
We had arranged a private dinner in a local couple’s home. That was such a memorable evening with great food and wine pairings accompanied by interesting local stories and tidbits.
I love cruising because you can unpack just once, and see several ports. The ship, Regent Seven Seas Splendor, holds about 600 passengers, but there were only 380 on board. It’s a great time to be traveling!
Istanbul is so exotic, and everywhere you turn there are beautiful mosques to explore.
Our visit to Ephesus was incredible, and they are still excavating the ancient city.
The ship has a Culinary Arts Kitchen, so I joined one of the classes. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot! I highly recommend it.
What were some of the disappointments or surprises you experienced that others should be aware of?
In these times, you really have to expect the unexpected and have a “go with the flow” attitude. One couple missed their connecting flight which had a ripple effect, causing them to miss the ship. They then had to fly to Istanbul to board the ship.
While we were sailing, we were advised of a tug boat strike in Athens, so, unfortunately, we had to return to Athens early, missing our last two ports of Rhodes and Santorini.
Although you still need to give yourself lots of time, I found the airport procedures went quite smoothly, with minimal delays.
Who do you recommend a Regent cruise to Greece and Turkey to?
Regent is an “all-inclusive” cruise line, which I love. The only thing you would need to pay for would be if you joined a culinary class, had any spa treatments or gift shop purchases. Shore excursions, specialty restaurants, as well as all onboard tipping are included. The dress code is “casual elegant” so no need to overpack.
What was the “COVID-19” travel experience like for you – ie. pandemic protocols, Covid tests, vaccination status checks, masks, temperature checks, etc.
As well as being double-vaccinated, wearing a mask is “the new normal”…in the airports, and in flight. The flight attendants are very diligent about ensuring everyone is wearing a mask unless you are actively eating or drinking. The cruise line tested everyone before boarding and again, masks are required, unless you are eating or drinking.
In the past, there was a self-serve buffet on the pool deck, whereas now the crew members serve you. There are lots of hand sanitizer stations and the crew members are visibly cleaning railings, door handles, and high touch areas.
Any final advice for anyone considering a Regent cruise on an itinerary like this?
If you’re thinking of taking a cruise, I recommend not to hesitate. The COVID-19 protocols and added sanitary measures made me feel very comfortable!
