Is Your New Year’s Resolution To Travel More?
Happy New Year from all of us at TierOne Travel! In 2020, we wish you great health, happiness, prosperity, fun with family and friends and, of course, lots of travel.
This is the time of year we resolve to make improvements – both personally and professionally. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, we hope you also set a goal to follow your dreams and plan to do what you love in the year ahead. For many of us, that includes travel.
No matter what your budget or the number of vacation days you have, if travel is your priority, there are resolutions you can make to ensure your year ahead involves travel. Here are a few resolutions to think about.
Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for Travellers
1. Revise your bucket list
We all have things we want to do before we die. If you don’t have a bucket list already, it might be time to create one. Make sure it includes your travel goals and at the beginning of each year, cross off your accomplishments from the list. Add new goals if you have them. And then organize all your bucket list items in order of priority.
2. Learn a new language
Learning a new language can be fun and challenging. It will also help you move toward your dream vacation in a country where you don’t currently speak the language. If travelling to Italy is on your bucket list, resolve to learn Italian in 2020. You don’t have to be fluent. Learning a few words and key phrases will go a long way to enhance the enjoyment of your trip.
3. Cook food from around the world
Keep your dream vacation top of mind by learning to cook food from destinations around the world. If you’ve always wanted to travel to Mexico, for instance, learn to cook enchiladas, fajitas, picadillo, and fritada. Likewise, you could try out some Vietnamese recipes or Italian. The possibilities are endless.
4. Travel somewhere solo
Travelling with loved ones, friends and family is awesome, but so is travelling solo. If going on a vacation by yourself seems daunting, think about joining a tour group for singles or talking with your travel agent about other great solo travel opportunities. In 2020, resolve to travel when and where you want to whether you have a travel partner or not.
5. Save money for travel
Budget is definitely a big consideration when making travel plans. This year, resolve to save for that trip you’ve always wanted to take. Every little bit adds up. Set up a separate savings account and start socking away a bit of cash each month. Another savings option, which is tax free with an added investment opportunity, is a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA).
6. Weekend getaways
You might not have a full week or longer to go on vacation, but there are always weekends. Better yet, take an extra day over the long weekends and plan for a four-day getaway. Always wanted to go to Vegas? Cross it off your bucket list! Our TierOne Travel specialists are ready to book you a weekend vacation that suits your wants and needs perfectly.
7. Learn different customs and cultures
Knowing beforehand the customs and cultures of the country you are travelling to is good practice. In 2020, resolve to do a bit of research before you travel. Save yourself any confusion, faux pas or misunderstanding by knowing what to do or not to on your next trip. For instance, did you know that shaking hands with women in Islamic countries is very much frowned upon? On the other hand, kissing men and women on the cheek is a common form of greeting in Italy and France.
8. Be an eco-friendly traveller
Sustainable travel is becoming more important, particularly in a world of climate change. One of your new year’s resolutions might be to have a lighter carbon footprint on the earth. Pack lighter, minimize your toiletries, use reusable bottles and utensils, use solar-powered chargers and explore eco-friendly travel destinations. Find out more in this Globe and Mail article from November 2019.
9. Learn the art of photography and videography
Capture your memories for years to come by learning how to take great photos and videos. There are many online tutorials as well as courses in your community you can enrol in. You might even be inspired to purchase a new camera before your next trip. You won’t regret the time you invest in learning to create amazing images from your travels.
10. Visit one of the Wonders of the World
Very few of us get to see the Wonders of the World in a lifetime, but some of them might be included on your bucket list. Resolve to cross one off your list in 2020. Find more about the New Wonders of the World here.
