Day 1

Enter Tanzania’s Arusha

Kilimanjaro International Airport is where the tour starts. Kilimanjaro International Airport to Meliá Arusha transportation is included. This overnight stay is at a five-star resort situated next to a traditional coffee plantation. Your African family safari gets underway in the morning!

Day 2

First Game Drive, Arusha National Park

Join a knowledgeable local guide for a full-day game drive in Arusha National Park this morning, the first of many you will take on your trip, to search for peaceful giraffes, raucous baboons, vibrant flamingos, and large buffalo. You’ll ride in one of Tauck’s open-top Africa safari vehicles where everyone gets a fantastic view of Tanzania’s spectacular wildlife. Midway through the day, return to the hotel for some free time before a welcome reception and dinner with some special treats.

Day 3

Tarangire

Today, visit Tarangire National Park, which has been immortalized in numerous films about Africa as the site where life first began, according to Maasai legend. Admire the traditional African savannah that spreads out all around you, the plains teeming with wildlife and baobab trees. Go on an afternoon game drive in Tauck’s open-topped safari vehicle and search for big cats relaxing under baobab trees or elephants cooling off at a watering hole. Enjoy your evening at Tarangire Safari Lodge over dinner.

Day 4

Safaris Through the African Wilderness

Today’s close-up encounter with animals in Tarangire starts with an early-morning game drive to Silale Swamp. After returning to the lodge for lunch and some hands-on Maasai craft instruction, go back into the bush for an afternoon wildlife drive and even more adventures that are sure to leave a lasting impression on everyone. Learn some Swahili around the campfire after dinner, maybe incorporating phrases like jambo (hello), kwa heri (goodbye), simba (lion) and ninafurahia (I am having a great time)!

Day 5

A Maasai boma, Lake Manyara, and a Village School

Visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You’ll meet the pupils and teachers at local schools that Tauck supports along the way, stop for lunch in Lake Manyara National Park, a haven for birdwatchers, and explore a Maasai boma (a traditional hut village preserving Maasai cultural customs). Arrive late in the day at the colonial lodge in Karatu, where you will spend the next two nights in cottage-style rooms with views of a coffee plantation and the amazing Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 6

The “Garden of Eden” of Africa: Ngorongoro Crater

The ancient Ngorongoro Crater, also known as Africa’s “Garden of Eden,” is one of the best places on this Africa tour to see the Big Five, which includes elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo, and the endangered black rhinoceros. There are many opportunities to see lions, cheetahs, hippos, and a variety of birds on game drives and over a special picnic lunch on the crater floor. The evening is spent at your accommodation in Karatu.

Day 7

Go to the Serengeti via Air

This morning, you’ll catch a flight from Lake Manyara to the Seronera airstrip in Serengeti National Park after leaving Tloma Lodge. As you do, you’ll fly above Oldupai Gorge, the site of the discovery of some of the earliest known human species, said to be 1.8 million years old, by archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey more than 50 years ago. You’ll start your three-night stay at the Meliá Serengeti Lodge when you reach there late in the morning in the middle of the enormous Serengeti plains. After lunch, take a late-afternoon game drive across Serengeti National Park to look for local wildlife. You might encounter lions, antelopes, elephants, and zebras going about their daily routines. After dinner at the lodge, head back to camp for a briefing on tomorrow’s journey in a hot air balloon over the Serengeti.

Day 8

Soaring over the Serengeti

Rise early for a spectacular hot air balloon trip* over the wide Serengeti plains, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush and some game viewing later in the morning. This will give you a completely fresh perspective on the scenery and creatures of Serengeti National Park. On an afternoon game drive with your local guide, search for zebras, hyenas, leopards, and other wildlife after lunch at the lodge.

*Please note that there is an age restriction of 7 years old for the hot air balloon ride.

Day 9

Maasai Culture and One Last Wildlife Drive

On the final full day of your family’s exciting Africa tour, your lodge in the Serengeti allows you to take in the African scenery, see more wildlife, and learn about the customs and way of life of the local Maasai people.  The whole family can take hikes with the Maasai employees of the lodge while learning about local conservation efforts and Maasai crafts. After lunch, have a final game drive in Serengeti National Park where you can frequently see herds of wildebeest, lion and cheetah packs, giraffes, and zebra, as well as other animals. This will be your last chance to witness the incredible circle of life in Africa. On your final night on safari, you’ll partake in a lively farewell meal and some authentic Maasai fun after enjoying Tanzania’s mesmerizing sunsets during a farewell reception on the terrace of your lodge.

Day 10

Return to Arusha and Depart for Home

Kilimanjaro International Airport marks the end of the tour. After returning to Arusha, the tour comes to an end with a stop at the Shanga community project and lunch at the Cultural Heritage Center. Tauck will reserve a day room for you at the Meliá Arusha so that you can repack and unwind as you choose before your flights out of Africa that depart late tonight.
