Welcome to TierOne Travel’s “Best Romantic Destinations” series, where we will be highlighting the most romantic places to travel for couples, as recommended by our own experienced travel agents!
Next up in our series is Mayan Riviera, a romantic getaway destination to dream about. Mayan Riviera is the perfect place for romance, sun and sand, as recommended by TierOne Travel Consultant, LaurieLee Rosser.
Read on to learn about why the Mayan Riviera is the perfect romantic travel experience for you and your love.
The Mayan Riviera is a very popular destination, with easy access from many areas in Canada. The two major Canadian airlines Air Canada and WestJet fly here throughout the year, and tour operators / charters fly here “in season” (which is about mid-November until the Easter period). This destination offers a great number of adults-only fabulous all-inclusive resorts specializing in Romance.
What makes The Mayan Riviera an unforgettable destination for a romantic getaway?
Having travelled many times to this region, I can vouch that it just seems to call you back again and again! It offers wonderful beaches, five-star resorts, a laid back atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the region. Some of the things you can check out includes the Mayan Ruins, many exciting tours such as swimming with the dolphins, excursions to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres for the day, sailing on a Catamaran, jungle tours, zip-lining, and if you can imagine, even riding a camel! The weather can also be very enticing, and the surreal colors of the ocean very welcoming for a lovely romantic stroll on a long beach.
When is the best time to go to visit the Mayan Riviera?
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, low season is generally August through November (but rainfall can be more prevalent at this time, along with Hurricane season). The winter months tend to be the most popular and busy, as North Americans tend to want to escape the cold and enjoy the warmer weather. Keep in mind that anytime there is a “holiday” or a “school break”, there is a tendency for the rates to be higher ie. reading week in February, and March/April Spring Break. In my opinion, March through mid-June are wonderful months to visit the Mayan Riviera.
What are some activities / things to do in the Mayan Riviera?
Visit the area’s many amazing cenotes! Cenotes are natural swimming holes formed by the collapse of porous limestone bedrock, providing a world of groundwater pools. The Mayans revered cenotes because they were a source of water in dry times. The name “cenote” means “sacred well”. These caves can be mysterious and quite romantic!
There are so many fun and relaxing tour options in this region, perfect for any type of couple. Go horseback riding on the beach, take a catamaran or snorkelling tour, or visit some of the ancient monuments.
Or, just enjoy each other’s company at your beautiful resort! If you are celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, many of the resorts will offer a “package” that may include breakfast in bed or a candlelight dinner on the beach, depending on the occasion and the resort.
What are some resorts or places to stay that you recommend?
Four that come to mind are:
Le Blanc (A Palace resort in the heart of Cancun) – fabulous 5-star all inclusive adults-only luxury property, white glove service. Their specialty is romance and luxury.
The El Dorado Maroma – This is a wonderful, more intimate, 5-star all inclusive adults-only property located on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mayan. Offering a variety of romantic accommodations from Junior Suites, swim-out suites, infinity pool suites, villas and overwater bungalows.
Excellence Playa Mujeres – I like to call this spot my “hidden gem” for romance and service. The property is located about 35-40 minutes North of Cancun in a gated area called “Playa Mujeres”. This area is a little more remote, and only has about 15 hotels in the area. You won’t find any shopping malls other than what is right at your resort, but you won’t want to leave this property. It offers romantic accommodations, fine a la carte dining, and the service is outstanding. The Excellence will leave you with a feeling that you must return.
The Hilton Playa Del Carmen – Location, location, location! In the heart of Playa Del Carmen just steps from the famous Fifth Avenue, which is known for its shopping, nightlife and multitude of restaurants. The Hilton is a 5-star all inclusive property that has recently undergone a renovation. You will find spacious accommodations, fabulous cuisine, and service from the heart. The ferry service to Cozumel is located at the end of Fifth Avenue, a short walk from your resort.
These four properties all offer a mobile app, which allows you to make your reservations right from your beach chair!
What type of budget should a couple expect for a getaway to Mayan Riviera?
This can vary depending upon the time of year, where you are traveling from, the length of your stay and type of accommodations you desire, and the number of nights. Generally, you can count on a package price of $3,000 – $3800.00 per person for a 7-night vacation at a higher end resort (prices are subject to seasonality) Remember, these are all-inclusive, adults-only properties that really specialize in service and romance!
What are the current COVID-19 restrictions and safety protocols in the Mayan Riviera?
At this time (and, of course, this can change at any given moment) you do not require a COVID test to enter into Mexico. You do however have to provide a COVID-negative test 72 hours prior to boarding you flight home to Canada. Many of the luxury five star resorts will offer you the test at the resort, and some are offering this for free, while others do have a fee attached to the service. Each resort has developed their COVID protocol to keep you safe from your arrival until you depart.
